Architect: Teng & Associates, Inc.
Owner: General Services Administration
Value of project: $3,788,000
Scope: Installation of security bollards
Time frame: 12 months
Project Overview:
To protect these three federal buildings from possible acts of terror, Restore Masonry was hired to construct security barriers. The existing granite curbs and sidewalks were removed. To create the new barriers, 353 steel bollards were installed in fresh concrete. Granite bollard covers and caps were then installed over the new walls. Twenty-two new granite planters and over 400 granite sidewalk planters were then reinstalled atop a new waterproof membrane to restore the site to its former condition. The central challenge of this project was to perform complex and labor-intensive work in one of the busiest areas of downtown Chicago. All work was performed on time, on budget and with no disruption of vehicular or pedestrian traffic, resulting in much-needed security without compromising the esthetic appeal of these great Chicago buildings.
